Architect Competition

Mid of August 2002 Tauernwind Winkraftanlagen GmbH started an architect competition to find a concept for reconstruction of the Klosterneuburger Hütte in Oberzeiring

According to competition requirements, participating architects were asked to redesign the already existing Klosterneuburger Hütte in such a way so that it could be used as a visitors center for the wind park. Reconstruction should include enlargement of the eating area, a room for an exhibit about renewable energy and a seminar room. The structures should be flexible and the operation of the building made as easy as possible, avoiding great expense.

Regarding aesthetics, it was the special wish of the competition management that Alpine kitsch should be avoided. Rather the idea of the blending together of high tech and nature should be brought into the design of the building, maybe even opening up a new direction for Alpine building.

The selection committee of five, under the direction of Architect D.I. Konrad Frey from Graz, met on November 14th. They needed almost 12 hours to select 3 prizes for special acknowledgement and three major prizes from the 18 projects which had been submitted.

It was first after long discussion that "the rotor blade" from Titus Pernthaler won the competition, since the second and third place proposals were also of very high quality. Wolfgang Schwarzenbacher from Salzburg won second place with a sensitive design in which the Hütte would be covered with a curved roof, third place went to Georg Giebeler from Cologne, with his design to build a new building in front of the Klosterneuburger Hütte smuggled in the mountain.

The three prizes for special acknowledgement went to Wolfgang Feyferlik/Susanne Fritzer from Graz, Johannes Melbinger from Graz and Markus Prackwieser from dinA4 Architects from Innsbruck.

All of the submitted projects can be viewed from 29 November to 13 December 2002 in the Marktgemeindeamt Oberzeiring. The exhibit opens on November 29th (Opening hours: Monday-Thursday 7-12 and 13-17, Friday 7-12).

The Photos of the Projects 10, 1, 12, 8 and 3 have been submitted by the respective architects. All other Photos were taken by the Tauernwind Windkraftanlagen GmbH after approval by the architects. The architects agreed to the publish the projects information and photos on this website.
